Dining room at L'Anima, London, UKThis is a glossy, smart restaurant, light and airy with natural materials and subdued colours, opened by Francesco Mazzei (who opened St Alban for Wolseley owners Chris Corbin and Jeremy King). It’s unashamedly aimed at City high rollers or those with sophisticated tastes. Mazzei is an accomplished chef and here concentrates on his southern Italian upbringing and first culinary experiences. Menus change seasonally; in winter perhaps charcoal grilled scallops with n’duja (spicy spreadable sausage) or a southern Italian soup, then a selection of pastas like wild mushroom fettuccine with truffle or Marsala and duck liver risotto. Main courses are equally skilled: Sicilian rabbit or wild cod with smoked aubergine. Given the high standards the menu offers a good value meal. The wine list is naturally dominated by Italy and champions some of the best; there are also wines by the glass or carafe. Service is as smooth as the venue. Set 2-course lunch £24.50, 3 courses £28.50.
