Lao Peng You Restaurant Review:

About the restaurant & décor: The secret is out about this dumpling and noodle house, whose name means "old friend." Translation: Walk in without reservations at your own risk. Enter the tiny storefront and be greeted by a host, who'll gladly take your name and cell phone number for texting if you're agreeable to wait. A small bench opposite the counter doubles as a waiting area, where diners look longingly into the kitchen or at the diners already seated, as if willing their turn. Plants, screens and family photos create a homey feel.

Likes: Plump handmade dumplings.
Dislikes: Counter service is deceiving; expect long waits.

Food & Drinks: Brothers Daniel and Eric Wat summon family memories for their casual BYOB. To ensure quality, this might mean hours may vary if the lovingly prepared, signature jiaozi (dumplings) or noodles run out. Handmade daily, the dumplings are indeed the stars; the beef and cilantro version sops up a spicy soy-based sour sauce and comes out piping hot. A chicken noodle soup pairs with leafy greens, but skimps on meat and flavor. More impressive: the eggplant salad, served cold, with garlic, cilantro and spicy chili oil. Enjoy milk or assorted teas to temper the spice.
