Le Garage really does feel like a garage, giant metal door and all. It also feels like the kind of chef-owned bistro you’d find along the waterfront in a hip Provençal town such as Cannes or St. Tropez. Le Garage is right at the edge of Sausalito’s Schoonmaker Point Marina and features an outdoor patio that’s one of Marin’s most popular places to dine in season. Indoors, the sleek, urban-looking room is open to the elements on one wall, so there’s always a view. Big bowls of P.E.I. mussels come in two preparations. Try the Mistral, with aïoli, shallots, saffron and white wine, very Nicoise. A salad of Brie beignets with frisée, La Quercia prosciutto, pumpkins seeds and walnut vinaigrette is richly autumnal. Duck confit that falls off the bone might be paired with fresh butter beans and chorizo in a maple-mustard vinaigrette. The house charcuterie platter feels like a hybrid of Paris and Madrid in its mix of homemade rabbit pâté, pork rillettes, Palacios Lomo (Spanish pork loin), saucisson Jesus and aged Serrano ham with ground mustard, cornichons and pearl onions. Ideal to share. For dessert, individual tarte Tatins are a must-have---darkly caramelized, not-too-sweet apple slices on a puff pastry crust and topped with crème fraîche.
