Dining room at Leon de Lyon, Lyon, franceFollowing in the footsteps of his father, whose name stretches along the restaurant's stained-glass façade, Jean-Paul Lacombe continues to celebrate the great culinary traditions Lyon is famous for. After all, no one should ever forget that this vital cuisine turns the humblest ingredients into noble dishes, and makes conservative cooking seem cheerful and refreshingly unstuffy. Time-honored regional favorites are still young at heart here, and the less-than-local dishes are authentically interpreted. The cuisine targets flavors and hits them on the mark, without a lot of fuss. Efficient service, and a full and focused cellar. Outstanding welcome from Fabienne Lacombe. Relais et Châteaux.

Scaled back menu - now more Bistro than fine dining

We went on a Thrusday night. It was busy by 8:30. The restaurant has clearly scaled back with the recession and gone to more bistro style with prices reduced accordingly. Still, the food was quite good. I'd say a 15 on the Gayot scale. If you want fine wines, they have them, you just have to ask for the gastronomic wine list. We got 25% off the price of the bottle we picked, whch we did not discover until the bill arrived. This took the wine from being a bit pricey to very reasonable. If you're not trying for an experience equal to an 18 on the Gayot scale but do want very good food and wine, I'd gladly recommend this restaurant.
