MadLife Grill Restaurant Review:

MadLife Grill combines a restaurant and a separate music and comedy performance venue. Built to house both, the building boasts a pair of roll-up doors opening to outdoor seating. Black-and-white portraits of famous performers, such as Elvis Presley, dot the brick walls. Chef David Berry (Horseradish Grill, Bellina Alimentari) fields a menu of Southern-flavors-focused plates. Fans of his North Carolina barbecue with slaw and Carolina-style sauce will find it here. Pimento cheese, fried green tomatoes, fish and grits (a south Georgia classic) and other tastes shape the offerings, and for vegetarians, there’s a seasonal vegetable and grain selection. Butternut squash bisque with “winter” pesto (made from kale) makes a good starter, and the heavily coated fried fish is fresh and tasty. Get the bread pudding for dessert. The wine list is limited, as cocktails and brews seem to matter more. For the music aspect, secure reservations and anticipate a cover charge; the comedy club is on alternate Wednesdays. Dine early unless you like the very loud music next door.
