THIS RESTAURANT IS TEMPORARILY CLOSED MAR Restaurant Review: Experienced restaurateur Humberto Bermúdez chose Decatur to open MAR, which features authentic Mexican seafood. The kitchen is governed by former The Sound Table chef Joey Zelinka, who turns out such dishes as pickled oysters (preferred over the too-coated fried variety), foie gras empanadas, heirloom tomato gazpacho and grilled octopus salad. Anointing these offerings are classic Mexican ingredients such as tomatillos, serrano and chipotle peppers, red onions, lime and avocado. Small plates focus on fresh fish cebiches. We like the red snapper version, marinated in “tiger’s” milk, a blend of cream and citrus juices. Other than one or two fried items, most of the menu is healthful fare, such as grilled scallops on a bed of pipián verde with a drizzle of olive oil at the rim. Sides include tasty adzuki beans and mashed purple potatoes, but we’d skip the dry mashed plantain with Spanish chorizo. Cupcakes comprise the desserts. A mostly Mexican beer list and a decent, if small, predominantly Spanish array of wines join a raft of tequilas and mezcal-based cocktails.
