| The North End looks a lot closer to South Beach than to Boston Harbor from the vantage point of this slick spot from restaurateur Frank de Pasquale. Square, spare, white-walled and wood-floored, the clean, cool dining room hints at the story to come from the kitchen: its main theme is Italian seafood, organic ingredients its intriguing subplot. We wish there were a fitting climax; unfortunately, Mare has been dogged by disappointment since the acclaimed original chef’s departure. Mind you, the menu still twinkles here and there---popcorn shrimp plays in the Caesar salad; watermelon vinaigrette brings zing to truffle-crusted skate---but it lacks the constant sparkle it once had. |
