| Market announces its presence in this sternly modern W hotel at street level, almost more pointedly than the hotel itself. Another project by Jean-Georges Vongerichten, Market aims to assemble flavors from diverse cuisines, French, Asian and Italian most especially. The menu is seasonal, with spring bringing out such flavors as a pea soup anointed with Parmesan cheese. Or slip in for a pizza, our favorite being the one with black truffle and Fontina cheese. But most dishes borrow from the diverse cuisines to enhance each other. The succulent pork chop, for instance, comes with a pistachio pesto and roasted cauliflower. We liked the slow-cooked salmon with carrot sauce, lime and basil---an odd but pleasing medley of flavors. For those who prefer their proteins plain, a line-up of simply cooked meats might provide the perfect answer to the question of "What's for dinner?" For dessert, we suggest the sorbets, which show lively, intense purity of fruit flavors. The wine list is well chosen and offers some interesting choices by the glass. |
