Mengrai Gourmet Thai Restaurant Review

: Named for the 13th-century Thai king, this downtown restaurant offers a relaxed yet pampering setting, complete with soothing jazz and subdued lighting --- not to mention raw-silk curtains and red brick walls. Chef Sasi Meechai has prepared many a meal for celebs and royalty. If you order the green goddess prawns with avocado and green curry, you'll quickly see why. We also favor the house pad thai and the golden pumpkin soup, which is at once complex and delicate, and a restaurant staple. Served in a half-coconut, the lemongrass coconut soup is spicy with ginger and chilli, and herbed with makrut lime leaves and Thai basil. When it comes to choosing an entrée, the Number 54 --- red chicken curry with lychee and pineapple chunks, presented in a half-pineapple --- is a fine balance of sweet, sour and consolingly spicy. Complementing the menu is a generous selection of Ontario-based and international wines as well as North American and Asian beers. Service is friendly and knowledgeable.
