Take a culinary trip to South America just outside of New Orleans. Mexico, El Salvador and Honduras offer vibrant cuisines that enjoy equally good treatment and attractive presentations at this modest, friendly Latin American destination for budget dining. Huevos rancheros? Check. Fork-tender carne asada? Check. Some of the more interesting dishes include salpicón de res, a cold salad of chopped beef, mint, onion and lime, and the tongue-searing camarones a la diabla. Made-to-order Salvadoran pupusas are a major draw, especially the ones filled with cheese and loroco, the buds and edible flowers of a vine that grows in Central America. Soft-shell tacos cradling barbacoa and carnitas are inexpensive and pair well with bottles of Mexican beer or fresh juices. For dessert, we recommend the standout flan. Fiesta Latina’s dining room is utilitarian with hints of personality, such as the old diner counter with swivel stools, and the service is similarly rough around the edges but well meaning. Check out the weekday happy hour, 3 p.m.-6 p.m., for $2 Coronas, $2 quesadillas and some happening live music. On Tuesday and Thursday, tacos cost just $1 from 3 p.m.-10 p.m.
