Do not be fooled by the hippopotamus-size pink pig atop this barbecue joint near the sprawling General Electric Appliance Park factory complex. While the tender ribs and pulled pork are indeed popular, the Ole Hickory Pit’s local fame rests on its being the only place in town where you can satisfy (or develop) a craving for Western Kentucky’s barbecue specialty: mutton. Wood-smoked in the masonry pits for up to 16 hours, the aromatic mutton meat is chopped, mixed with a tangy tomato and vinegar sauce, and served as quarter-pound sandwiches. Try an open-face version on a pancake-size corn cake for a special treat. Smoked wings are also part of the lineup. Homemade desserts are house specialties, too. Cakes and fruit cobblers change daily, but there is always banana pudding and soft-serve ice cream. Sides are traditional. Soft drinks and very ordinary bottled beers are the beverage choices.
