Located a runway away from John Wayne airport, this sleek, Far Eastern-inspired spot is a hip place to hang out, especially at the affordable happy hour. Its striking setting is highlighted by a neon-backlit Buddha that coolly presides over the shenanigans. The flowery Cal-Asian fare is definitely secondary to the scene. The cocktail menu has thankfully ditched amateur hour drinks in favor of more serious libations, including some featuring Japanese whiskeys. The dinner menu offers all the basic Asian dishes as well as items any sushi lover has seen a hundred times before – think California rolls, seared albacore, seafood salad, and so on. Some may be surprised to see sushi offerings like uni and freshwater eel mixed in with the usual suspects. The sushi creations are elaborate and the presentation impressive, but they manage to still be pretty straightforward from a flavor perspective. This bodes well for the bar milieu, but not for any gourmet aspirations. When the spot is open for lunch, a local airport district business crowd congregates to nosh on sushi or more American favorites like teriyaki chicken or Kobe-style beef sliders.
