| Tucked within Montgomery Village Shopping Center, Monti’s tends to be a locals’ secret. The décor evokes the Southwest: terra cotta floors, hanging antiqued doors and ironworks, and wood shutters camouflaging views of Talbots and Ann Taylor. The vibe feels comfortable---but in an adult way, not mall-rat casual. It’s easy to nibble, with a raw bar, artisan cheeses and house-made charcuterie. Try starters like artichokes roasted with sea salt and pickling spices, or truffle-honey lacquered beets with Humboldt Fog goat cheese, a triumphant combination. There’s a nightly rotisserie special, perhaps suckling pig carnitas with chickpea pancake or local rabbit wrapped in pancetta. Otherwise, an appealing variety of mains include grilled Iowa hanger steak with truffled frites and sea bass in almond brown butter and capers. Parsley garnish isn’t déclassé here---since it’s fried, bring it on. Desserts have swagger: pineapple tarte Tatin with maple candied bacon and tangerine caramel or ricotta cheesecake resembling an almond crusted crotin splashed with juicy, lavender-roasted strawberries. More than two dozen wines come by the glass. |
