Get away from it all with a visit to Mount Charleston, about 35 miles northwest of Las Vegas, where towering pines create an atmosphere for hearty dining and the temperature is 35 to 40 degrees lower than in the valley. Perched at 7,800 feet in the Toiyabe National Forest's Spring Mountain Recreation Area, the charming lodge features picture windows with views of the mountains surrounding Kyle Canyon. Skiers, hikers and sightseers appreciate the half-pound Paul Bunyan burger and wild game versions --- buffalo and elk --- as well as such specialties as fish ‘n’ chips, St. Louis barbecued ribs, grilled salmon topped with tomato chutney and a selection of brick-oven pizzas.
