| “Shabu shabu” means “swish swish” in Japanese, and the most popular lunch and dinner option at this small, boisterous restaurant in the contemporary Hotel Tomo involves just that: diners use chopsticks to swish raw beef and vegetables through a tabletop hot pot of boiling water. The flash-cooked results can then be combined with ponzu and other sauces over rice. Wide platters of ingredients include thinly sliced rib-eye, mushrooms, tofu, udon and glass noodles, spinach and cabbage---and everything keeps coming until you say stop. Favored by groups of four or more, dining here can be messy, fun and leisurely, especially when deals include all-you-can-eat (for two hours) and all-you-can-drink saké and beer (Sapporo, Kirin) for roughly $12 more. The loud dining room and small bar has a steamy, casual, modern feel and can be packed with young people on a budget. |
