Like a sleeper movie that’s a much bigger hit than anyone had anticipated, Nicholini’s has blossomed to the point where, today, you’d be well advised to make reservations. It may be a tiny place in a strip mall, with a décor that kind of looks like Mom and Pop did it themselves, but the food is lovingly prepared, the portions are generous, and it’s easy on the wallet. We almost always order the daily specials, which have been uniformly good, and we especially love the mashed potatoes and the spoon-worthy sauces. Meat-eaters can’t go wrong with the veal marsala, piled high with sautéed mushrooms. Even with their low prices, Nicholini’s pays attention to details-the herbs are fresh, not dried, and rosettes of butter are served with the bread.
