NIU Kitchen Restaurant Review:

If you've ever been to a Spanish restaurant, there's a good chance you're familiar with gazpacho. You'll get no such thing at NIU Kitchen, a sliver of a space in downtown Miami that offers some of the best and most unorthodox Spanish food in the city. Rather than the traditional cold summer soup, chef-partner Deme Lomas has concocted a cold tomato soup with a scoop of mustard ice cream and basil oil drizzle and croutons on top. It's one of the many ways in which he does things differently. While you can have white anchovies in vinegar at virtually any other taberna, here the briny fish are marinated and served more like a causa, atop mashed potatoes, olives and pimenton. You can also find anchovies alongside tuna belly in the coca, a pungent and fatty take on a traditional Spanish "esqueixada." Plates are bold and vibrant, with unexpected flavor combinations such as pan-seared foie gras with honey bread, apple accents, raspberries and almond powder making complete sense. While the menu is small, there's almost always something new to discover; just make sure to order the signature "Ous" --- poached eggs beneath a mountain of truffled potato foam, bits of jamón Ibérico and black truffle. Desserts include chocolate ganache with a Nutella gelato. And because no Spanish meal is complete without a glass of vino, ask the owner and curator of the hand-selected wine list, Karina Iglesias, who works the dining room, to pour whatever new label she's obsessed with.
