Old Firehouse Restaurant Restaurant Review: This refurbished old firehouse in Hollywood, halfway to Edisto Beach, retains vestiges of its previous incarnation, with the retractable doors still visible on the ceiling of the restaurant. A collection of fire department T-shirts decorates the back wall. The seafood-dominated menu also offers an assortment of crispy, thin-crust pizzas that can serve as entrées or shareable appetizers. The Palmetto is festooned with slices of shrimp, fresh spinach and blue cheese over red sauce. The enormous crispy fried flounder is served with spicy-sweet peach jalapeño chutney and a puddle of creamy stone-ground grits. Occasionally, chef Bill Twaler will get his hands on some particularly nice fish, and offer it several ways; his sheepshead preparations are especially worthy. The Southern-style desserts include a piping-hot peach and blueberry cobbler with fresh ice cream and a walnut-coconut cake with tangy, sweet cream cheese frosting. Service is friendly but a little sloppy, and trimmings like paper napkin-rolled silverware and cornbread in a basket stand in contrast to the well-executed, somewhat sophisticated entrées. |
