Old Spanish Sugar Mill Restaurant Review:

Go early; the lines get long at this old sugar mill converted into a rustic eatery just a stone's throw from DeLeon Springs. Be prepared to wait awhile, but if you have ten or more people, you can make a reservation. You get to be the chef at your table: there's a griddle in the center, and servers drop off pitchers of pancake batter (the multigrain mix is best), along with little bowls of fresh fruit, peanut butter, pecans and chocolate chips to mix in. Everyone, it seems, is frying flapjacks, though you can request eggs, bacon, sausage, french toast or homemade granola. At lunchtime, the menu expands to offer burgers, salads and sandwiches, but pancakes are the specialty of the house, no matter what the time of day. If the weather's cool enough, ask for a seat on the screened porch. After breakfast, break the 30-minute rule and take a dip in the springs, or rent a canoe for a paddle down the spring-fed run. It's a glorious setting, and one of the most fun ways to dine we know.
