| Alums of Atlanta-founded Peasant Corporation, Pamela Furr and Maureen Kalmanson have kept the Peasant brand alive at the Peasant Bistro, an art-filled, modern space that's apropos for both business and romantic dining. A well-trained staff assures professional service. Don't think over-fancy for this fare: this is the kind of French food you'll find in a bistro or even a routier (truck stop)---mussels, French onion soup gratinée, duck confit, coq au vin. Cold weather brings braised dishes such as beef short ribs. But there are Southern American touches as well, such as the fried green tomatoes with roasted red pepper sauce, a take on a Southern classic. The Peasant’s version of Caesar salad is to grill the Romaine and then dress it. A menu of steaks and chops provides simple options. A bar menu with small plates for $5 is also available. Desserts are worthwhile on all fronts. The wine list is short, but its offerings are lovely, and the beer list merits attention as well. A charming note: Iced tea comes with a tiny pitcher of simple syrup to sweeten it properly---from a Southern perspective. |
