| Penang introduces Washingtonians to the real fire and flavor of Malaysia, plus samplings of Indonesian favorites and assorted Japanese sushi and sashimi dishes. That's reason enough to celebrate this restaurant, but even more, the service is friendly and the flavors, flawless. Take the Malaysian staple roti canai, a fiery curry dish served with a wheel of flatbread---the roti---as delicate as a cloud. This rendition is so outstanding we could make it a daily must, if it were not for so many other Malaysian specialties on the menu to sample, from the fish-and-noodles dish, Penang asam laksa, to the lusty rice noodle stir-fry, char kway teow. Patrons in a hurry can profit by Penang's express lunch menu, but this casual restaurant, reminiscent of a beach resort cottage (Penang is one of Malaysia's best beach destinations) deserves your time and attention: Don't plan to eat and run. |
