Penne Pasta Restaurant Review: This unprepossessing order-at-the-counter Italian eatery is the playground of Maui chef Mark Ellman, who once owned Avalon before becoming the presiding spirit behind the fast-food Maui Tacos outlets. Ellman opened this simple restaurant to have someplace to cook. And cook he does: spaghetti with baby calamari and Spanish piquillo peppers, baked penne with three cheeses, Bolognese made with beef brisket, and chicken-artichoke couscous risotto. All for bargain prices. But be sure not to skip over the daily specials board, for you might miss potato gnocchi, lobster-and-pesto pizza, or shrimp linguini---all of which are not regularly on the menu. |
