Peter's Grill Restaurant Review: The Peter's Grills of the world are fading fast. It's too bad because before there were food courts, there were downtown lunch counters like this one. In fact, it has been feeding bankers, lawyers, shop clerks and secretaries since 1914. It's short-order cooking at its best, with blue-plate favorites that include freshly roasted turkey and whipped potatoes smothered in gravy as well as meatloaf or baked chicken with dumplings and a piping hot, yeasty roll. Take a seat at one of the long, curving counters for a steaming bowl of vegetable soup and a triple-stacked club sandwich, served up with style by veteran waitstaff who know a thing or two about a thing or two. So what if some dishes are old-school Minnesota-style? (Translation: rather bland.) The green apple pies are the stuff of legends: even ex-President Bill Clinton has been known to indulge. |
