Much better than a department store restaurant needs to be thanks to noted chef Alan Wong.

Dining room at The Pineapple Room, Honolulu, HIThere is hardly a better midday meal spot on the island for ladies who lunch and those who admire them. This clean and classy café on the very top floor of Macy’s at Ala Moana Shopping Center brings renowned chef Alan Wong’s talents and influences with good results. Creativity and a moderate price point is the focus here as befits the setting. The menu starts with weekend breakfasts and the healthy oat flour crêpes with peach compote along with classic island favorites like fried rice topped with fried eggs. Lunch is the preferred meal, and you can start with Wong's chilled Hamakua Springs tomato soup, a well balanced sweet-tart-savory delight. Meat lovers will not want to miss the signature meatloaf which features local beef mixed with a variety of sausages and is served with a wine gravy. Dinner gets mixed reviews as the setting loses some of its charm with overly bright lighting. Nonetheless, the menu offers an intriguing pan-roasted pork belly with spicy orange miso and Korean red pepper-based sauce. Dessert features the signature Pineapple Room upside-down cake as a caramel sundae---well worth the indulgence. There is a full bar and a limited, but thoughtfully selected, wine list.
