 The Ravenous Pig: An American GastroPub Restaurant Review: Just a stone’s throw from Park Avenue, this neighborhood favorite is a pleasant surprise among Winter Park’s mostly ho-hum dining choices. Inspired by London’s gastropubs that promise fine food along with alcohol, owners James and Julie Petrakis have crafted this cozy spot that keeps the crowds happy. The couple trained at the Culinary Institute of America and their creativity shines with a menu that changes with whatever’s freshest at the market---many of their ingredients are grown in and around Orlando. If the tables are full, grab a seat in the bar area where you can order a signature cocktail (the dark and stormy is particularly good) and pub fare, such as tempura-battered lobster tacos, house-made soft pretzels with cheese dipping sauce, and shrimp and grits. The main menu offers choices such as seared rib-eye with vegetable gratin, grilled Florida wahoo with chickpeas and red pepper chutney, and agnolotti filled with locally grown corn and creamy cheese. For starters, nibble rich Gruyère biscuits and share a platter of the interesting charcuterie, which is all made in house. For dessert, try the pigtails---cinnamon-sugar-dusted curlicue fritters with chocolate espresso sauce for dipping. The menu also features microbrews and nice wine matches for the cuisine, and many are available by the glass or half bottle. |
