Raw Bar Restaurant Review: Bondi Beach residents and other locals know to avoid the flashy tourist-jammed restaurants on the main strip. But you’ll find them at Raw Bar, enjoying the sunshine, cool ocean breeze and panoramic views of the bay, while they tuck into some of the freshest raw food in Sydney. The chef (headhunted from Japan) has suppliers who find him their best-grade fish each day. His style is simple and modern --- geometric and colourful with delicate Japanese flourishes. The basics are available --- gyoza, edamame, udon and à la carte sushi --- but each ingredient hits the table either cooked with precision, chilled at its freshest, or properly ripe. The signature bento box (regular or vegetarian) contains an array of assorted sashimi, inside-out rolls, ohitashi (the deep-green braised spinach salad with tangy roasted sesame miso dressing), tempura, tender teriyaki chicken, miso soup and gohan (steamed rice) and works well for a beach picnic. Don’t pass up the Raw Bar salad --- a wild concoction of raw vegetables, seaweed and Japanese flavors that cleanse the palate and energize the mind, body and soul. The minimalist restaurant (styled with wood, stainless steel and Jensen bubble lights with floor-to-ceiling windows) is quite magical at night. It’s good for a date or just to recharge the batteries after a little too much excess --- and they deliver.
