Marvin Woods is one of Miami's better known chefs, having showcased his low-country cooking locally at Savannah, Hollywood Prime and The National Hotel. Now he's home to roost at his own M Woods, a cozy restaurant dressed in earthy tones of olive green, chocolate, dark bamboo and stone, and featuring a three-diner chef's bar where guests can get close to the kitchen action. The cuisine remains rooted in low-country's hearty, homespun flavors, but borrows from Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America too. The result is hearty, fanciful and unique. Appetizers include Caribbean jerk duck cake, lobster dumplings in an exotic vanilla bean and lobster broth, and shellfish steamed in coconut. Big, meaty main courses like Cajun rib-eye, grilled pulled pork and fried chicken are cooked with gusto. If not for the kitchen's consistent inconsistency, M Woods would be a true gem.
