| A standout among the area’s many Mexican restaurants, Reyes Market is everything one should be. Typical Mexican fare is done right at this convenience store-eatery. Corn tortillas, the foundation of most dishes, are pressed continuously and retain moisture and fresh flavor. Heavily marbled pork is seasoned, braised and simmered into tender carnitas. The tacos are small and simple, as you’d find in the old country, but unlike most restaurants south of the border this one serves the sort of oversize burrito that people have come to expect in California. Hearty traditional soups, pico de gallo salsa loaded with cilantro and guacamole made from Carpinteria’s famous avocadoes round out the offerings. Pan dulce and other Mexican pastries are also available. Slightly removed from downtown’s tourist zone, the restaurant nonetheless sees heavy traffic from residents and visiting foodies in the know. |
