This longtime hideaway’s reach may exceed its grasp, perhaps due to the frequent turnover in ownership and chef direction. Inventive attempts at New American cuisine can be hit or miss. But there are a few high points, like the tried-and-true appetizers of oysters Rockefeller, lump crab cakes and lobster bisque. Don't miss the pistachio- and almond-crusted sea bass with tomato-saffron sauce, or the shrimp and ravioli diablo. The forte is simple back-to-basic dishes like rotisserie roasted prime rib, grilled rack of pork or pan-seared filet au poivre. Salads can be spectacular, too, like the towering chilled wedge drenched in homemade blue cheese dressing that begs to join a steak dinner. When the River Oaks Grill sticks to the classics, it sizzles. Check out the many interesting winemaker dinners on slate; and the piano bar, which can be a lively respite for music lovers.
