| Over the years, many restaurants have come and gone at the Bourbon Orleans Hotel, which is situated almost in the exact center of the French Quarter. While the location would seem ideal, the room has never attracted a crowd. The latest incarnation is Roux on Orleans, an intimate dining room serving what could best be described as Creole comfort food. The downside is a lack of originality. The menu, while serviceable, is not imaginative enough to distinguish the restaurant in any way. All of the usual local suspects are in line---turtle soup, gumbo, crab cakes, pork chops, pasta jambalaya and more---but nothing really excels as a notable preparation. Even desserts are run of the mill: bread pudding, pecan pie. The only surprise is the complexity of the wine list, which offers everything from basic selections to a few top shelf choices that one would expect to find in a room of more distinction. |
