Roy's Poipu Bar & Grill Restaurant Review: This busy, pricey restaurant can feel a bit frenetic, and the mundane setting in a shopping center drags down what should be an uplifting dining experience. Still, chef Mel Nowels does a skilled job of turning out exciting food that is innovative and fresh. The cuisine blends Japanese, French, Chinese, Italian and Pan-Asian influences, and offers a choice of a prix-fixe menu, wine-pairing menu or à la carte dining. By cobbling together several items --- Thai seared scallops, minted chicken lumpia, kalbi beef gyoza and crunchy apple salad are good picks --- you can make a stimulating, eclectic meal. The mixed plates are another good way to sample a variety of items from the tempting lineup; we also recommend the dry-aged pork chop with jalapeño gnocchi and the misoyaki butterfish. The wine list is virtually a copy of Roy's Honolulu list and reasonably priced.
