THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Rustica Restaurant Review

: Rustica is perched on the top floor of Newport Beach’s Fashion Island in a brightly adorned, airy space with large windows that afford a nice view of the shopping center’s bustle. Executive chef Renieri Caceres, who has worked alongside Gordon Ramsay and Michael Mina, brings a passion for the farm-to-table philosophy and infuses it with craftsmanship in both composition and presentation. For instance, a starter such as the char-grilled baby octopus is a sumptuous treat. The pan-seared Hudson Valley foie gras pairs with the accompanying brioche and huckleberry compote to create flavor notes that would even work well for dessert. Fish aficionados should partake of the crispy-skin filet of branzino served atop a bed of Israeli couscous, while grilled beef tenderloin, “21”-spiced bone-in rib-eye, and ale-braised short ribs provide those seeking meat plenty of options. For dessert, we recommend the whimsically designed pine nut coffee cake with mascarpone ice cream. And since Rustica considers itself a California wine bistro, it’s no surprise that the range of wines is extensive and eclectic.

Rustica - My favorite Restaurant in Newport
by CK_FoodCritic on Tue Apr 05, 2011 10:44 am
Rustica is without question the best restaurant at Fashion Island and one of my new favorites around Orange County. Rustica is very affordable which is always a plus for someone looking to try a couple things without guilt over the price.
Lunch and Dinner menus are exceptional. All of the plates are planned beautifully and rustic flavors fit well here. Location and design are excellent providing the perfect place to sit and dine while strolling through Fashion Island or Newport Beach.
I have been made a fan because every dish I have been served was surprising and delicious which is a real compliment from a discerning critic. The mushroom soup has a warm comforting appeal. Prosciutto flatbread can be had for a mere $5 at happy hour and is a simple but tasty appetizer. Foie Gras is perhaps my favorite food in the world but I am always concerned with the treatment of animals because I am a Greenpeace and Peta supporter. Rustica's foie gras comes from Hudson Valley in NY where the ducks are free range, no cages, and provide only the finest grade A meat where nothing is wasted of the animal. The dish itself is fantastic with little seared steaks of Foie Gras on homemade donuts with a Pinapple Chutney and a sprinle of Sea Salt on top. Salads are also excellent from Steak Cobb salad to Beef Carpaccio I found them to be creative and delicious enough to inspire even the most carnivorous of eaters to order salad. Veal Meatballs go great with fresh pasta and like many of the dishes are more affordable than what you could order at an Olive Garden. Sides are a great add on option for anyone especially the Truffle mac and cheese which for only $6 is one of the best mac and cheese dishes in OC.
Overall Rustica has won me over and I will be eating there whenever in the area as long as they keep on the track they are on. Trust my review from someone who knows food and all of the fine dining restaurants in Orange County and Los Angeles area, this one is a great new addition to the area and if they keep cooking the way they have been recently then they deserve your business.
