In terms of its menu, this eatery is almost identical to Scott Conant’s original Scarpetta in NYC, down to the famous (or notorious) $23 serving of spaghetti with tomatoes. That said, the creative, contemporary Italian food is arguably some of the best in town. And the indoor/outdoor ocean-view setting in the renovated Fontainebleau Miami Beach makes Miami’s Scarpetta a far more relaxing special-occasion spot than Manhattan’s Meatpacking District to enjoy Conant’s downright dangerously creamy polenta (served with a side of bold truffled mushroom fricassée); near-greaseless, lightly crisp-coated seafood-vegetable-lemon fritto misto; and elegant crudos, including a raw yellowtail with ginger-infused olive oil, plus tuna “susci.” The latter bite-size New Italian nigiri---delicate raw tuna slices with a marinated organic carrot filling, tiny mushrooms and preserved truffles---taste good enough that the teeth-gnashingly precious name is forgiven. As for the pricey spaghetti, the molded portion of thick house-made pasta is none too large (typical of most dishes here) and the sauce is not southern Italy’s purist essence of falling-off-the-vine-ripe tomato. But the concentrated, luxuriantly buttery-tasting, basil-spiked dish is heavenly---and who expects pasta in paradise to come cheap?
