Karen Smiley is a classic urban pioneer, opening in 2004 what is the only restaurant in Castleberry Hill, a frisky, adventurous neighborhood. As businesses morph into loft living spaces and art galleries, more and more amenities of a civilized life come into being, such as this popular pizza spot. Smiley says people come and stay for hours enjoying the space and the simple menu. Pizzas are the specialty, and come on a thin, delectable crust in sizes ranging from slices to 16-inches. All the standard toppings are available, but specialty pizzas offer some very unusual combos, such as puréed apricot, smoked turkey, mozzarella and cream cheese. Go there if you wish, but we think simpler is better. Sandwiches, salads and simple Italian-inspired entrées round out the menu. The wine list is pretty extensive for a pizza spot, totaling some 20 choices.
