It isn’t easy to find a unique restaurant concept in New Orleans, but the Brennan family (Commander’s Palace) has the right recipe. Combining two trends --- the gastropub concept and the craft cocktail craze --- SoBou (South of Bourbon) in the heart of the French Quarter is a chic, strictly 21st-century establishment. The restaurant’s interior has been totally refashioned from the former Italian place that occupied the space, with an architectural emphasis on the bar, which serves concoctions with fancy names such as the Commander's Palace Cha Cha and the Pink Elephant Parade. SoBou calls its cuisine "Louisiana Street Food," meaning boudin balls, pork cracklin’s, shrimp-and-tasso pinchos, oyster and caviar tacos, and sweet potato beignets, yellowfin tuna cones and a foie gras burger. Although the small plates are nicely priced, you're likely to spend more than you expected to by the time you leave, because the dishes are indeed quite small. On the extensive wine list, a number of Spanish selections complement the Creole- and Caribbean-spiced foods. Be sure to ask about the cherries jubilee white chocolate bread pudding for dessert.
