This chain offers tasty and reliable barbecue including some varieties not commonly found roasting on commercial wood fires---such as smoked turkey and smoked catfish. Founded by Sonny and Lucille Tillman in 1968 as a neighborhood gathering spot, they have expanded their reach to all corners of Tampa, St. Petersburg and beyond. The meat is slow-smoked over hardwood fires, and you can tell visually---as well as by taste---as the process gives the meat a reddish tone. The brisket has become one of the most popular options here. Side dishes include coleslaw, baked beans, fried okra and Sonny's Special Recipe onion rings. In true Southern style, there are ample pitchers of freshly brewed iced tea, sodas or beer served in jumbo glasses.
