A far cry from former occupant Café Mozart, which famously proclaimed itself the “most romantic restaurant in San Francisco" but was affectionately known as its gaudiest, Sons & Daughters brings a refreshing brand of modern romanticism to this intimate space near Union Square. Dressed in an elegant, black-and-white palette, the 36-seat dining room exudes sophisticated kitsch---brass-studded black leather chairs tuck into small walnut tables and dripping chandeliers sparkle above. Diners can order à la carte, but the best bet is to opt for the four-course prix-fixe menu for $54. Chefs Matt McNamara and Teague Moriarty are behind the creative menu that offers selections such as a lobster carpaccio: paper-thin lobster tail, raw of course, sprinkled with jalapeño and pomegranate seeds. A simple herb salad explodes with flavor thanks to a triad of radish, fennel and parsley drizzled with eucalyptus oil. Foie gras is prepared with an apple cider reduction and paired with diced green apples layered with mint. Roasted kombucha with dried fruits evokes Thanksgiving. Lush persimmon cake served warm melts in the mouth and is accompanied by fennel ice cream. Wines run the gamut, with selections hailing from as near as the Sonoma Coast and as far away as Lebanon.
