Chef Steven Robillio has taken the reins at Spindini, originally opened by Memphis restaurateur Judd Grisanti in 2007. Some things remain from the old Grisanti days at the South Main eatery, such as traditional pasta dishes and the wood-fired pizzas cooked to order in a flaming-hot oven at the end of the bar. But Robillio brings contemporary cuisine as well with seasonal dishes. Much of the produce used in Spindini’s Italian fare is grown in the restaurant’s garden in nearby Holly Springs, Mississippi. There’s a see-and-be-seen ambience since it tends to attract a hip, artsy crowd, especially on monthly South Main Trolley Tour art walk nights. Desserts include seasonal gelati and sorbetti, tiramisu, and chocolate soufflé cake. Twenty-plus wines are offered by the glass, and many fine wines are available by the bottle. The list is divided by the Old vs. New World dichotomy, and a Reserve list features name selections, such as Silver Oak and Ornellaia.
