Splashes Restaurant Review: Boasting a modern yet inviting space with wood floors, a glass chandelier and dark wicker chairs, Splashes in the historic Surf & Sand Resort is perhaps one of OC’s most romantic on-the-beach restaurants, with foamy white waves pounding the shore just feet away from your table. Executive chef David Fuñe offers a menu featuring contemporary and seasonal Californian dishes. Start by relaxing with a refreshing martini in the hip lobby-level lounge or at the cozy beach bar. Then head to the main dining room for a starter of yellowfin sashimi with hearts of palm and sea bean pistou or blue prawn mac ‘n’ cheese with spicy popcorn. Main courses, such as Alaskan halibut with huitlacoche and corn risotto or Jidori chicken with roasted wild mushrooms, work well within the oceanfront setting. Desserts include honey goat cheese cheesecake and a trio of seasonal sorbets. The wine list has more than 150 labels, mostly from California and France.
