Star of Siam, one of the first Thai restaurants in the city, is not totally free of the dreaded disease of complacency and carelessness. While it is still one of the better options around, and some of the dishes are quite good, it has some problems. Much of the waitstaff seems either overworked or uninterested, and food can be inconsistent. Despite all that, the soups are sensational, especially the tom yum. The chicken dishes---notably the Star’s Chicken Delight, a rousingly good combination of stir-fried chicken, pea pods, cashews and straw mushrooms---are quite good. The chicken massaman is one of the best around, and the satay with its fab peanut sauce cannot be beat. |
