In a town that thrives on butter, sauces and hearty fare, this is one of the few places where locals can say they “eat healthy.” A slim, colorful building houses Surrey's, which features good-for-you fare from wheatgrass to a fresh salad with locally grown organic produce. Breakfast and lunch offerings are more ambitious than one might expect. You can get not only biscuits and gravy and egg dishes, but also plump Gulf shrimp with grits, scrambled tofu and Mexican-style migas with egg, corn chips and pico de gallo. At lunchtime, smoked oysters and such specials as strawberry soup add intriguing options to the sandwich menu. Corned beef hash, which gets a New Orleans touch with andouille and boudin, is another popular dish. Mix-your-own fresh-pressed juices and locally roasted coffees draw newspaper readers and health-minded patrons alike.
