Surrey's Cafe & Juice Bar Restaurant Review: Surrey’s in the Garden District specializes in healthful offerings. You’ll find a lox BLT or a black bean and veggie burger. Salads feature locally grown organic produce, and mix-your-own fresh-pressed juices as well as locally roasted coffees draw newspaper-readers and health-minded patrons alike. But you can also find traditional fare. In the morning, the kitchen turns out classic Southern starters such as biscuits and gravy with either sausage or mushrooms and egg dishes, as well as plump Gulf shrimp with grits, and Mexican-style migas with egg, corn chips and pico de gallo. At lunchtime, smoked oysters and such specials as strawberry soup add intriguing options alongside the sandwiches. Try the spinach melt on focaccia or the vegetarian po’ boy. The casual, diner-style interior in this repurposed former residence is bright and inviting. Also located at 4807 Magazine St., 504-895-5757.
