| Part sushi bar-restaurant, part liquor bar-hangout, sushi lounges are now all over Miami. But back when the original Sushi Maki opened around the new millennium, young CEO Abe Ng's cool concept was unusual enough that his little place soon became The Sushi Joint That Ate Coral Gables. Instead of simply further expanding the successful brand, however, the restaurant marked its tenth anniversary with a new menu featuring some unique makis and a large assortment of witty Asian-Latin small plates that reflect multicultural Miami, plus a hip assortment of artisan sakés and rare Japanese craft beers to complement the dishes. Familiar faves are still available, but we'd bypass the boring California and excessive Volcano rolls in favor of the Haystack maki or the well-balanced sweet-hot Buddha-Cane (shrimp tempura, avocado, mango, spicy mayo and sugarcane soy). As befits SM's position as Whole Foods' sushi supplier, all poultry and meats are raised without antibiotics or growth hormones. |
