Tommy Bahama Island Grille Restaurant Review: Tommy Bahama Island Grille in Corona Del Mar Plaza has transformed from a kitschy Caribbean-inspired place to more of a casual California restaurant that utilizes fresh, seasonal ingredients. The bright décor, tropical greenery and Caribbean artwork are still there, but toned down a bit for a family-casual and Newport business crowd. Ladies-who-lunch show up at midday, while couples, families and big groups celebrate in the evenings with strong cocktails, cold brews and some good by-the-glass wine selections. Chef Jackie Nabong brings some island flair to each dish. For appetizers, try the sweet-and-spicy coconut shrimp, ahi poke flatbread and smoky grilled artichoke. The ahi salad is surprisingly different with its seared tuna and tart apples. The Cuban-style barbecued pork sandwich satisfies hearty appetites and picky palates. Desserts are just as appetizing, as in the sweet and tart Key lime pie and the creamy butterscotch pudding. After eating, stroll through the neighboring Tommy Bahama store for some upscale beach-inspired clothing and home décor. |
