Owner Tommy Moore has outfitted his eponymous café with museum-worthy photos and artifacts underscoring the African-American history of its Eastside location, and the plates could be on display as well. The experiment in evening dining might have ended, but lunch still shines with soul classics such as meatloaf, fried chicken, pork chops, cinnamon-laced sweet potatoes and stewed cabbage with ham hock. Daily specials focus on stalwarts the likes of fried or baked catfish and red beans and rice---all at economy-friendly prices. And if the peach cobbler disappoints, the corn bread compensates with class. Breakfast boasts eggs, grits, hash browns and more in true Southern style. Get your fix of biscuits with sausage gravy here before they disappear from the country’s culinary pantheon. Or go for the more upscale-sounding Eggs Alexander with corned beef hash and an English muffin, no less.
