THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Udipi Cafe Restaurant Review: Moving from the original cavernous location to a smaller space, the owners of Udipi Café created Bay Leaves in the original spot while preserving the flavors and textures of this South Indian emporium in a more intimate venue. On the lunch buffet, more than a half dozen dishes await, their specific nature changing daily---an all-you-can-eat meal deal. Look for curried vegetables, coconut rice, dhal (the lentil-based dish), and vegetable fritters. Did the lowly potato and even lowlier okra ever come off so tasty? No, especially when combined in a single dish and seasoned as only an Indian cook can do. Prepare to bite into whole spices. The condiments will include zingy pickled vegetables, mango chutney, tamarind chutney and an intriguing coconut chutney. A sweet dish always is on the menu, perhaps a cardamom- and cinnamon-scented milk dish spiced with cashews. Masala dosai, a thin pancake, is filled with potatoes and onion and is brought to the table while you're filling your plate at the buffet. At dinner these same dishes may be ordered individually.
