Chef Christine Manfield, former owner of Sydney’s Paramount Restaurant, brought her latest project home after spending years overseas establishing East @ West in London. Manfield’s take on food is eclectic (vegetarians do well here), and the dishes (think sliced duck smoked with jasmine tea, local Murray cod with jambon, and white truffle noodles) are all entrée-size---good for sharing and trying more from the menu. The dessert menu reads and tastes just as clever. There's a reason the sweets stay in such synch with the dinner menu, Manfield's brain is behind them. There's crackberry, a creamy and whipped ode to tangy yogurt, its lemon essence mingles with a burst of blackberry. White peach curd, marshmallow and "fairy floss," called “snow white,” kisses---and awakens---taste buds, proving to be its own Prince Charming. Her wine list is strong on international labels plus carefully selected and esoteric vintages, and the wide range of cocktails is worth careful investigation, too. With banquettes that spill out of doors, this small restaurant is groovy enough to suit the sophisticated and diverse tastes of the locals.
