THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Up Modern Kitchen Restaurant Review:

Stairs lead, or an elevator whisks, guests to Up Modern Kitchen’s second floor space boasting a window wall that gives view to the bustling crowds below on Walnut Street. A bar/lounge at one end balances the adjacent long dining room on the other. Servers move purposefully among the stark tables and banquettes, animating the neutral palette that serves admirably as a backdrop to the neighborhood’s smart casual set. A skilled chef constructs a menu both comfortable and adventurous. Lunch brings creative salads and sandwiches served with house-made pickles. Brunch runs through all manner of egg dishes --- including the popular dippy egg and kielbasa, with crispy potatoes and onions. Dinner adds appetizers like grilled octopus with eggplant and garlic; pastas, notably gnocchi with duck ragù; and mains of meat and fish, such as seared trout with bacon, neeps and mushrooms, as well as vegetarian. Nightly specials, perhaps stuffed artichokes, pop up. Dessert is a non-event. The wine list, however, is thoughtfully assembled to incorporate less common gems. Jazz brightens Sunday brunch, a DJ plays on Wednesdays, and a bar menu kicks in for late-night munchies.
