Urban Tavern Restaurant Review: Urban Tavern opened with much fanfare, largely because Christopher Condy and Laurent Manrique were the powerhouse team backing the eatery. Under Manrique, the mostly Mediterranean menu also featured comfort food from the south of France, but since their departure the gastropub's menu has evolved into one featuring contemporary American cuisine. Appetizers, such as the sausage and pretzel, speak to the restaurant's brewpub sensibility, while the presentation echoes Urban Tavern's minimalist chic décor: chopped sausage is served in its own ramekin, while neatly piled sauerkraut and a small dish of mustard are the accoutrements. The menu's “small bites” can be ordered in bulk to encourage sharing at the table. Standouts include bacon-flavored tater tots and a trio of deviled eggs, each one featuring a unique and delectable filling (our favorite being the smoked trout). Some entrées shine, such as the beef short ribs, rich and velvety thanks to 18 hours of braising in red wine at 200 degrees. Good luck resisting tempting desserts like the “PB Cup” with sea salt brittle and caramel gelato. Mid-day diners will appreciate the value in the express lunch---a cup of soup and half a sandwich such as the French dip with horseradish sour cream for $10. The location is already ideal for a Union Square shopping respite or pre-theater meal, but Urban Tavern recommends itself even more with five hours of validated parking for guests.
