Valbella Restaurant Review: Valbella has long been the Old Greenwich go-to spot for special occasions. Not surprisingly, the ambience, service and Northern Italian cuisine all warrant a hefty price. Start light with the Belgian endive, caramelized walnuts, poached pears and Gorgonzola tossed in an olive oil and balsamic vinegar dressing. For something a little more substantial choose the stuffed jumbo shrimps with crab meat and vegetables in a beurre blanc sauce. While the extensive menu offers a wide selection of fish, poultry and meat entrées, including specialties like a venison filet served with soft polenta in a lingonberry and red wine sauce, regulars know the highlight is veal. Try the medallions of veal in a Cognac sauce with chestnut and cremini mushrooms, or the veal chop stuffed with mozzarella and prosciutto. There's a cavernous wine cellar containing some 11,000 bottles of vino from which to choose. Private parties can dine around a radiantly heated, massive granite table, retiring to the nearby fireplace for an after-dinner drink. If you see a special event on the horizon, it's best to book, and early at that.
