Valbella Restaurant Review: Valbella has long been the Old Greenwich go-to spot for special occasions. Not surprisingly, the ambience, service and Northern Italian cuisine all warrant a hefty price. Start with seafood-centered small plates including diver sea scallops wrapped in Nueske’s bacon on a bed of tender cannellini bean purée, and an almond-crusted langoustine in a white wine butter sauce. The extensive menu offers Italian specialties including al dente house-made pappardelle with sweet peas, porcini mushrooms and burrata in a veal bolognese sauce, and black trenette with fresh tomatoes, capers, arugula, lobster chunks and jumbo scallops in brandy garlic oil. A grilled double-cut Berkshire pork chop is topped with sautéed vinegar peppers and accompanied by broccoli rabe and roasted potatoes. The dining room exudes romance and elegance, helped in part by a cavernous wine cellar containing some 11,000 bottles of vino. Private parties can dine around a radiantly heated, massive granite table, retiring to the nearby fireplace for an after-dinner drink. If you see a special event on the horizon, it's best to book, and early at that.
