Van Loc Restaurant Review: We pity vegetarians who so often must settle for dishes no more exciting than a portobello mushroom burger. Van Loc does much to rectify this, offering a wide selection of rich and spicy soups with a water base and a few takes on tofu that are as fiery and satisfying as anything meat eaters experience. Tofu is stir-fried with chiles and lemon grass and served with peppers and green onions. Those who have no objection to broth-based soups can count on huge bowls of pho, the traditional Vietnamese noodle soup: beef, chicken, meatball and vegetarian versions are all served with a side of fresh spouts, basil leaves and lime wedges. There are plenty of hearty dishes, too, but our favorite is the ga xao lan, a spicy chicken curry in a coconut sauce studded with peanuts. Take note that the joint serves beer and wine only.
